Interactive Television Innovator Don Gordon Launches Bulldog:
A New Company To Enable Hyper-Targeted Television Advertising Solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (April 17, 2009) — Don Gordon, a leading innovator in interactive television for more than a dozen years, today announced the launch of Bulldog United (“Bulldog”), a nascent stage company that is developing hyper‑targeted advertising solutions for the broadcast television industry.

Gordon, whose 40+ issued patents cover video-on-demand, digital television advertisement insertion and interactive program guide technology, has founded Bulldog to enable TV networks, access network operators and advertisers to replace TV network commercials with higher-value, targeted advertisements fed directly to the individual television over an IP connection.

Backed by private investors and strengthened by powerful patent-pending technology, Bulldog enables the advertising community to leverage the millions of anticipated Web-connected television sets to create a Television Advertising 2.0 environment in which individual viewers receive targeted TV ads based on a variety of criteria, including geography, television viewing habits, online search behavior, and their recent e-commerce interests.  Benefits include:

  • Ad targeting down to the individual TV
  • Rich, real-time audience profiling data
  • Expanded Campaign Management opportunities for broadcast television advertising
  • Higher ROI for Advertisers’ Investment in TV ads
  • Improved Value Proposition for TV networks to Advertisers
  • More relevant advertising for consumers; and
  • The development of an annuity revenue stream for TV makers — the first ever.

“We feel very encouraged by our talks with the various sectors of this ecosystem, and they all agree that the TV Advertising Model must help guarantee advertisers the ROI for their broadcast advertising investments,” said Gordon.  “Bulldog infuses a mass reach vehicle — television — with hyper-targeting technology to help ensure a return for advertisers and create value for TV Networks and Consumer Electronics Manufacturers.  ”

Bulldog’s approach is to springboard off the enormous rise in Web-connected television sets that is expected to reach close to 10 million units in the US beginning in 2010.  Many observers believe that the addition of TV makers to the advertising ecosystem could help generate much-needed residual revenues for the consumer electronics industry.

Leading his Bulldog team of notable industry professionals, Gordon most recently had been with ActiveVideo Networks™, where he served as COO.  He joined ActiveVideo Networks as CTO early in 2006, following 11 years with Microsoft Corporation and DIVA Systems.  With Microsoft, Gordon served as director of development for Microsoft’s former TVD venture, then was named director of solutions engineering for Microsoft TV.  He was the first employee of DIVA Systems, where he served in various technical and marketing capacities before being named General Manager and Vice President, Broadcast Products Division.
